St. Louis Cracks Down on Fireworks & DWIs for Fourth of July

With Fourth of July Weekend just days away, law enforcement agencies throughout St. Louis County and Missouri are making it clear that there will be little tolerance for those who choose to use fireworks or drive drunk.

While backyard BBQs, libations, and fireworks have become part of how many Americans celebrate our nation's independence, local law enforcement and public safety agencies are urging residents throughout the St. Louis metro area to leave fireworks displays to the professionals this year and to be aware that strict penalties will be enforced for those who break the law.

  • Fireworks - In St. Louis County and all 91 municipalities,it is illegal to use, possess, manufacture, or sell fireworks. Local agencies attribute this ban on fireworks to the numerous injuries and property damage that they can cause. Under local law, “fireworks” is a term used to cover a wide range of explosive devices. From sparklers and magic snakes to roman candles, mortars, and other projectile explosives, all fireworks are off limits in the county. Use and possession of these devices can result in fines that range from $50 to $1,000, depending on the circumstances at hand. Despite the strict laws and penalties in place in St. Louis County, fireworks are legal in many of the surrounding areas, including Jefferson, Franklin, and St. Charles Counties.
  • DWI/DUI - In addition to warning the public of the dangers and illegality of fireworks, St. Louis law enforcement agencies are also advising the public not to drive while intoxicated. Fourth of July weekend – as well as the days preceding and following the holiday – accounts for high rates of DWI accidents and injuries. As local residents celebrate the birth of our nation, they are encouraged to drink responsibly and not get behind the wheel.

Law enforcement agencies throughout the county will be joining a nationwide effort to keep public roadways safe this week. Increased patrols will be on high alert for curfew ordinances, liquor law violations, and signs of intoxicated and impaired drivers. If arrested and charged with a DWI, you can face harsh penalties that include hefty fines, possible terms of imprisonment, considerable financial costs, and a criminal record.
